Bilan 1992 de la contamination des côtes françaises par les composés organostanniques ArchiMer
Michel, Pierre; Averty, Bernard.

Cultured heart cells from oyster: an experimental approach for evaluation of the toxicity of the marine pollutant tributyltin ArchiMer
Droguet, Mickael; Devauchelle, Nicole; Pennec, Jean-pierre; Quinn, Brian; Dorange, Germaine.
European Community regulations on chemicals promote alternative methods to test substances presenting potential risks for the environment. In the present work, cultured atrial cells isolated from oyster (Crassostrea gigas) were used as an experimental model to investigate the toxicity of tributyltin (TBT) after short-time exposure at concentrations representative of those that can be measured in seawater, marine sediments and/or bivalves bioaccumulating this pollutant. In vitro and in vivo assays produce values of the same order of magnitude for both animal/cell survival and heart/cardiomyocyte beating rate. The survival rate of whole animals decreased from 10(-6) M TBT after 3 days. For cultured cells, the viability, evaluated using 3-(4,...

First record of butyltin body burden and imposex status in Hexaplex trunculus (L.) along the Tunisian coast ArchiMer
Lahbib, Youssef; Abidli, Sami; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Averty, Bernard; El Menif, Najoua Trigui.
We have assessed for the first time the current status of tributyltin (TBT) contamination in Hexaplex trunculus along Tunisian coastal waters. Two sampling campaigns have been performed in July 2004 and July 2007 at seven different sites. The snails were analyzed for imposex status, i.e. Imposex incidence, Relative Penis Length Index (RPLI) and Vas Deferens Sequence Index (VDSI), followed by the quantification of butyltins in their tissues. Imposex was detected in six populations from the 2004 samples and in five populations from the 2007 samples. The imposex incidence ranged from 0 (no imposex) to 100%, the RPLI from 0 to 56.7 and the VDSI from 0 to 4.4. TBT was also detected in six populations in 2004 and five populations in 2007. The concentrations...

Mutagenic effects of tributyltin and inorganic lead (Pb II) on the fish H. malabaricus as evaluated using the comet assay and the piscine micronucleus and chromosome aberration tests Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ferraro,Marcos Vinícius M.; Fenocchio,Alberto Sérgio; Mantovani,Mario Sérgio; Ribeiro,Ciro de Oliveira; Cestari,Marta Margarete.
Genotoxicity studies on toxic metals and their organic compounds are very important, especially so in the investigation of the effects of these compounds on the aquatic environments where they tend to accumulate. The use of endemic aquatic organisms as biological sentinels has proved useful to environmental monitoring. We assessed the mutagenic potential of tributyltin (TBT) and inorganic lead (PbII) using samples of the fish Hoplias malabaricus (commonly called traíra) using the comet assay and the piscine micronucleus and chromosome aberration tests. Eighteen H. malabaricus were acclimatized in three individual aquariums, each containing six fish, six fish being exposed to 0.3 mg/g of body weight (bw) of TBT, six to 21 mg/g bw of PbII and six being used...

Sublethal and histopathological effects of trace levels of tributyltin fluoride on adult oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Chagot, Dominique; Alzieu, Claude; Sanjuan, Jane; Grizel, Henri.
Shell malformations and histological effects of environmental concentrations of TBTF (2, 13.1 and 64.8 ng/!) were assessed on adult oysters Crassostrea gigas during a I-month experiment, incIuding both an exposure and a depuration phase. The results showed that the digestive gland is the primary target organ. Recoverable modifications were observed at the lowest concentration. Limited necrosis was observed at the highest concentration and a longer exposure could have led to extensive and irreversible tissue lesions. Shell malformations (chambering) were observed during the depuration phase. Finally the authors suggest that safe TBT levels in mariculture waters should be lower than 2 ng/l.

Tributyltin: A Bottom–Up Regulator of the Crangon crangon Population? ArchiMer
Parmentier, Koen F. V.; Verhaegen, Yves; De Witte, Bavo P.; Hoffman, Stefan; Delbare, Daan H. R.; Roose, Patrick M.; Hylland, Ketil D. E.; Burgeot, Thierry; Smagghe, Guy J.; Cooreman, Kris.
The restrictions and the concerted action of the global ban on the use and presence of tributyltin (TBT) in marine applications to protect ecosystems in the marine environment in 2008 was mainly based on the economic impact on shellfish industries and the dramatic extinction of local mollusk populations in the past. In contrast to the vast datasets on effects on mollusks, the knowledge on impacts on species from other taxa remained in the uncertain until almost two decades ago. The assumption on a long-term TBT-mediated pernicious metabolic bottom–up regulation of the crustacean Crangon crangon population was provoked by the outcome of an EU-project ‘Sources, Consumer Exposure and Risks of Organotin Contamination in Seafood.’ This study reported high TBT...

Triorganotin as a compound with potential reproductive toxicity in mammals BJMBR
Delgado Filho,V.S.; Lopes,P.F.I.; Podratz,P.L.; Graceli,J.B..
Organotin compounds are typical environmental contaminants and suspected endocrine-disrupting substances, which cause irreversible sexual abnormality in female mollusks, called "imposex". However, little is known about the capability of triorganotin compounds, such as tributyltin and triphenyltin, to cause disorders in the sexual development and reproductive functions of mammals, including humans and rodents. Moreover, these compounds can act as potential competitive inhibitors of aromatase enzyme and other steroidogenic enzymes, affecting the reproductive capacity of male and female mammals. In this review, we discuss the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms by which triorganotin compounds induce adverse effects in the mammalian reproductive...
